Treat yourself to homemade doughnut bites that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
What you'll need:
- 1 1/2 cups plain flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup full cream milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 tbsp melted butter
- oil, for frying
Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 2 tsp cinnamon
How you'll make it:
- In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon and baking powder. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the cinnamon sugar coating ingredients and set aside.
- Pour oil into a large, deep skillet, aiming for about 5cm deep. Heat the oil to between 185 deg C to 195 deg C. Test with a drop of water; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, sugar and melted butter. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until thoroughly combined.
- The batter will be sticky. Using a spoon or scoop, drop small balls of dough (about 4 cm in diameter) into the hot oil. Work quickly, as the dough will lose its shape if rolled ahead of time.
- Fry the doughnut holes for 1-2 minutes on each side, flipping as needed, until golden brown. Remove from the oil and immediately toss in cinnamon sugar. Serve fresh!
